Greene County is located in the South-Eastern portion of Mississippi. Greene County was established on the 9th day of December in 1811 and was named in honor of the Revolutionary War General, Nathanael Greene. Portions of Amite, Franklin, Wayne, and what would later become George counties.

The county seat is Leakesville, near the center of the county. Other Greene County communities include: McLain, State Line, Avera, Leaf, and Neely. In it's first census in 1820 there were 1,445 residents listed. In the last federal census in 2000 the population was 13,299.
